Key Highlights

• June 2024 Production: In June alone, local plants manufactured/assembled 4.26 million handsets, compared to a mere 0.08 million imported units.
• January-May 2024 Production: During the first five months of 2024, 13.08 million handsets were locally manufactured/assembled, while only 0.76 million units were imported.

Breakdown of Manufactured Handsets

Out of the 17.34 million handsets produced:

• 2G Handsets: 6.19 million units
• Smartphones: 11.15 million units

According to PTA data, 61 percent of mobile devices on Pakistan’s network are smartphones, while 39 percent are 2G devices.

Import Statistics

• Fiscal Year 2023-24: Pakistan imported mobile phones worth $1.898 billion, marking a 233 percent increase from $570.071 million in the previous fiscal year.
• In Rupee Terms: The import value in rupees was Rs535.690 billion for 2023-24, a significant 291.45 percent growth from Rs136.847 billion in 2022-23.
• June 2024 Imports: Mobile phone imports rose by 76.77 percent month-on-month (MoM), totaling $278.574 million in June, up from $157.592 million in May.
• Year-on-Year (YoY) Growth: In June 2024, imports saw a 419.90 percent YoY increase, compared to $53.582 million in June 2023.

Overall Telecom Imports

• Fiscal Year 2023-24: Telecom imports reached $2.366 billion, registering a 147.36 percent growth from $956.696 million in 2022-23.
• June 2024: Overall telecom imports were $320.094 million, showing a 232 percent YoY increase from $96.415 million in June 2023. MoM growth was 51.28 percent, up from $211.586 million in May 2024.

Pakistan’s mobile phone manufacturing industry continues to grow robustly, significantly outpacing commercial imports and contributing to the country’s economic landscape.
